Conditions Of The Hip
ARTHRITIS
The most common types of inflammation of the hip are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and arthritis following an injury. The initial treatment is an injection of a steroid. If that fails to relieve the pain, you might consider stem cell treatment for temporary relief. Ultimately, if all else fails, a hip replacement may be appropriate.
AVASCULAR NECROSIS
Loss of blood supply to the hip causing death of the bone in the joint. This condition is most commonly diagnosed by MRI as it may not be visible on X-ray. Severe cases may be treated by joint replacement.
BONE SPUR
Arthritis often causes bone spurs which result in painful impingement of the hip joint.
CHONDROMALACIA
An abnormality of the cartilage covering the surfaces of the hip. As a result, the hip can become swollen and painful during the joint’s movement. Depending on the part of the hip affected, our surgeons may be able to clean out and remove those shaggy, abnormal edges through a small tube called an arthroscope.
IMPINGEMENT
Anything that prevents the ball from moving smoothly in the socket. Usually due to damage or deformity. Minor causes of impingement can sometimes be resolved through an arthroscope. Major structural problems are usually treated with joint replacement.
LABRAL TEAR
The labrum is a gasket around the cup side of the hip that holds the ball in the socket and helps absorb shock. It is made from cartilage and can be torn during sports or accidents. Some labral tears are painful and can be treated through the arthroscope.
LOOSE BODY
The ball and socket of the hip joint are normally lined by smooth cartilage. Damage to the cartilage can cause a piece to break off and float in the fluid of the joint. This loose body can float into the joint space and become painful. Our surgeons can grab and remove those pieces of cartilage through an arthroscope.
STRAIN
A strain is an injury to the hip joint due to excessive force, often involving the labrum.
